BOMA Enspire is a three-year program designed to accelerate deep energy retrofits and emission reductions within Canada’s commercial real estate sector.

The BOMA Enspire Awards honour the achievements of those pushing the boundaries of energy efficiency and sustainability in the built environment.

The BOMA Enspire Awards is a national awards program that celebrates industry leaders driving sustainable building performance, measured through outstanding emission reductions.

From over 450 award candidates across four categories: office, retail, mixed-use, and light industrial & universal, 12 winners were recognized during BOMEX Halifax 2025.

Entry is quick and easy.

All buildings currently enrolled in the BOMA Enspire program are automatically considered for awards eligibility, provided that:

  • ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager (ESPM) data are current and
  • Account sharing with the BOMA Enspire program remains active.

 

New participants are welcome to enter the competition!

To be eligible for BOMA Enspire Awards, participants must first enrol in the BOMA Enspire program and create an account in the BOMA Enspire portal. As part of enrolment, participants must provide :

  • Building location and size
  • ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager (ESPM) property ID
  • Authorize the BOMA Enspire program team to access ESPM property data

The BOMA Enspire Awards offers those that compete in local BOMA Energy Peformance competitions with the opportunity to gain national recognition.

Regional award candidates simply need to enrol their building(s) in BOMA Enspire and provide read-only access to your ESPM account.

Regional and national program deadlines have been realigned to provide local winners the opportunity to compete nationally.

Driving building performance with emissions reductions across four categories:

Office

Office buildings are properties used primarily for office space (minimum 50% of total floor area dedicated to office space)

4 Categories

Office: ≤ 100,000 sq. ft.

Office: 200,001 – 500,000 sq. ft.

Office: 100,001 – 200,000 sq. ft.

Office: > 500,000 sq. ft.

Driving building performance with emissions reductions across four categories:

Light industrial & Universal facility

Light industrial: Warehouses, distribution centers, packing facilities and light manufacturing. These properties typically have one to two storeys with between  5 and 50% of floor area dedicated to office space, and include loading facilities)

Universal facility: Specialized buildings, including hotels and lodging, restaurants, places of worship, health care facilities, schools, recreation facilities, correctional facilities, libraries, fire stations and other institutional buildings.

4 Categories

Light Industrial ≤ 100,000 sq. ft.

Light Industrial: > 100,000 sq. ft.

Universal Facility: ≤ 100,000 sq. ft.

Universal Facility: > 100,000 sq. ft.

Retail

Open-air retail: Shopping centres with store entrances facing outdoors, managed as a single property, with a minimum 50% occupancy rate

Enclosed retail: Indoor retail facilities with multiple stores under one roof, managed as a single property.

4 Categories

Open-air Retail: ≤ 250,000 sq. ft.

Open-air Retail: > 250,000 sq. ft.

Enclosed Retail: ≤ 250,000 sq. ft.

Enclosed Retail: > 250,000 sq. ft.

Mixed-Use (4 categories)

Mixed-use buildings include properties that combine two or more uses, such as office, retail, institutional, or residential space, managed as a single property.

4 Categories

Mixed-use: ≤ 100,000 sq. ft.

Mixed-use: 100,001 – 200,000 sq. ft.

Mixed-use: 200,001 – 500,000 sq. ft.

Mixed-use: > 500,000 sq. ft.
